Originally developed as a government project in 1959, ownership transferred through to BHP and later BlueScope Steel. In 2017, Taharoa Ironsands returned to full New Zealand ownership.

Taharoa's specialised processing plants incorporate advanced gravity and magnetic separation technology, enabling efficient recovery of a resource that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Taharoa Ironsands is the largest employer in the Ōtorohanga district and is an economic powerhouse for the economy.
